ANDA: DeforestationTime: 30 October 2002, 13:30-14:30 Location: C-1 Chair: Jeremie Deravin Commerce Equitable working in partnership with Fir Trade, www.commerceequity.com Presenters/ Participants: Eder Zanetti ANDA Forest Engineer MSC The Wednesday afternoon workshop on ANDA was presented by Mr.Jeremie The session began with a short video clip of school project work being done by ANDA founder Jean- Pierre Schwarz. In opening the session Mr. Deravin stressed that ANDA is not a charity or an NGO but a business model based upon a philosophy of the conservation, preservation and development of natural, historical and cultural resources. Mr Deravin drew out the two main problems facing the Amazon regions:
Mr. Deravin said that ANDA answer to these problems has been to offer an economic alternative which addresses both the problem de-forestation of the Amazonian Forests and problems related to poverty in the region by:
Using power point Mr. Eder Zanetti Forest Engineer for ANDA illustrated graphically those factors contributing to 90 % of de-forestation problems. Including which were selective logging, longer time gaps having the same IRR, the over use and degradation of forest sites, burning and land exchange. Mr. Zanneti took as an example the coffee plantation program and also spoke about the new innovative "Seed Bank" project. This seed lab and nursery will ' Hive' seeds from around the world both for exportation and for the preservation of endangered tree specie. When asked about the response of Brazilian Government, Mr. Zanetti said that Government was working together with NGO organizations, had initiated the Net program for producing improved seeds for re-forestation programs and was also giving funding.
